1Magic ring
Make a magic ring with the warm brown cotton yarn and place it on the 5.0 mm sage hook.
2Round 1
Chain 1, work 6 single crochet into the ring, then pull the center closed and join with a slip stitch. (6 sts)
3Round 2
Work 2 single crochet in each stitch around, keeping the circle flat. Join at the end. (12 sts)
4Build the center
Round 3: repeat (1 sc, 2 sc in next st). Round 4: repeat (2 sc, 2 sc in next st). Finish with 24 stitches.
5Join the petal color
Fasten off brown, join sunflower-yellow yarn cleanly, and position the hook for the first petal.
6Crochet the petals
Repeat around: slip stitch in the next stitch; in the next stitch work ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, slip stitch. Make 12 even petals.
7Check the flower edge
Lay the flower flat and check that every petal is even before fastening off the yellow yarn.
8Add optional leaves
With sage yarn, chain 6 and shape 2–3 small leaves using slip stitch, single crochet, and half double crochet.
9Weave, block, finish
Weave all tails into matching-color stitches, trim them, then lightly damp-block the coaster flat.
Small details make the finish better.
- Use cotton yarn so the coaster absorbs small drips and keeps its shape.
- Keep the brown center flat; if it cups, loosen your tension slightly.
- Make all petals with the same tension so the edge stays balanced.
- Block the finished coaster flat before using it.
- A set of four to six makes an easy handmade gift.
